AUDIOVISUAL PERFORMANCE : No Longer A Tree – Iván Puñal
No Longer A Tree, the audiovisual performance created by Iván Puñal, is a profound exploration of the relationship between humans and nature in a world shaped by the Anthropocene. This show immerses the audience in a visual and sonic experience that reinterprets the natural landscape within the context of a planet drastically altered by human activity. The performance questions how the natural world, as we know it, transforms and loses its original essence in the hands of progress and unrestrained consumption.
Iván Puñal uses technology to bring to life a digital forest, where trees, rivers, and mountains are transformed into computer-generated models. In this synthetic world, nature loses its authenticity, becoming an artificial "second nature" devoid of life, symbolizing how humanity replaces and transforms the organic with the artificial. Inspired by the laws of thermodynamics, particularly the concept of entropy, Puñal illustrates how constant growth and unchecked accumulation lead to disorder and, ultimately, the collapse of ecosystems.
The performance relies on impactful visuals and a soundtrack that envelops the viewer, transporting them to a dystopian setting where the natural balance has been replaced by abstract simulations. Through this digital environment, No Longer A Tree raises awareness about ecological impact and the consequences of our footprint on a closed system like planet Earth. It calls on us to question where our current lifestyle is taking us, inviting us to look beyond the surface and recognize the interconnectedness between our actions and the planet's future.
This performance, in its fusion of art and science, offers a provocative look at the future of our ecosystems and provides a direct critique of our perception of nature in a world increasingly dominated by the artificial.
